Green Anole

Anolis carolinensis

The green anole is the only anole species native to the United States and was once the most popular pet lizard before bearded dragons took that crown. These small, agile lizards are known for their ability to change color from bright green to brown based on mood, temperature, and environment - though they are not true chameleons. Males display a distinctive pink dewlap (throat fan) during territorial and courtship displays. Green anoles are inexpensive and widely available, making them tempting beginner pets, but they actually require more specialized care than their cheap price suggests - including high humidity, UVB lighting, and live insect diets. They are primarily display animals that stress with handling.
