Uromastyx
Uromastyx sp.
Uromastyx (also called spiny-tailed lizards or uros) are impressive desert lizards from North Africa and the Middle East that make excellent pets for keepers wanting something different from the standard bearded dragon. Multiple species exist with varying adult sizes and colors - from the smaller ornate and ocellated species at 10-14 inches to the larger Egyptian uromastyx reaching 24-30 inches. All species are strict herbivores eating seeds, flowers, and vegetation with no insects needed. Uromastyx require very hot, dry conditions mimicking their desert origins, with basking temperatures reaching an extreme 120-130°F that most homes require powerful heating equipment to achieve. Once established and tame, uromastyx are personable lizards that develop strong feeding responses and recognition of their keepers.
